Spiffing Up Your Walkway, Entryway, & Back Entrance

If you’ve ever thought that getting rid of your excess stuff would be overwhelming, you were right….if you thought about doing it all at once. Because you really can’t do it all at once, I’ve devised a plan that will help you make steady progress month by month. If you’re serious about digging out from under the burden of excess, now is the time. Take advantage of this monthly support to find the empty spaces and freedom you are craving.

Even if you are not a packrat, you’ll benefit from
refining your space and place.

Keeping an organized house requires consistent attention to weeding out. In the monthly issues of this newsletter, you’ll get guidance and support for this project. You will gradually perfect your space–room by room. You will need to be patient and gentle with yourself. And committed.

You’ll have the opportunity to participate in teleclasses, Get it Done Days, and group activities. If you have a friend who could use some help cleaning up and out, forward this link to them.

We’ll begin this month-by-month year of deluttering process with the first impression you and your visitors have as they approach your house or apartment.

Walkway, Entryway, Back Entrance

After reading this newsletter, go outside and walk up to your house or apartment the same way you do every day. Are there broken toys or tools in the yard? Are there signs of unfinished projects like flats of plants, weeds, bags of mulch, and tangled hoses? Now that you’re paying attention, you may see things that you haven’t seen before. Don’t be shocked. Familiar sights soon become a blur.

What impression do you have as you approach your home or apartment?

  • This place is well-maintained. It’s welcoming.
  • Yuck, this is so unappealing.
  • Oh no, I have so much to do on this place.
  • What a slob I am. Why don’t I get this place fixed up?

If you felt your energy sink as you approached your home, then you’ve learned a valuable lesson. You may have been feeling an unconscious sinking of energy every day as you arrive home but may not have known why.

If day after day you see unfinished projects, messes, unmade decisions, you would certainly feel icky and overwhelmed. There’s a direct correlation between your entryway and your feelings as you approach your entryway. Your guests feel it too.

Decluttering the Walkway, Entryway, and Back Entrance

  1. Pick up all the obvious trash and throw it away.
  2. Clear the path and put things where they belong. Put away the unfinished projects and make a note on your calendar to remind you to do them. Don’t leave projects out as a reminder to do them. Unfinished projects are a drag. They drain your energy and dampen your mood. Make a list of them and put them away. Better yet, complete the unfinished projects related to the focus of this month’s topic.
  3. Walk up to your house again and take another look. Does it look and feel better?
  4. Now take another look and see if there is something you can do to spiff it up–a fresh coat of paint on the door, a porch plant, a clean or new welcome mat, a swept or hosed off sidewalk or porch, etc.
  5. Do the same with your back door. You want to feel good about coming and going.
  6. Now, what do you see when you first enter your home? Is it welcoming, neat, organized? If not, start through this same process again. Get rid of the trash, put things where they belong, and take a fresh look to see if you can spiff it up.
