Lately I’ve noticed that a lot of people are opting out of being in charge of their lives.  If you think you’ve been slipping and letting others determine your life outcomes, how about opting back in and making it your job to run your life?  I highly recommend it.

Imagine that you are doing a performance appraisal of your life management skills (like a supervisor might do) - especially those related to living a healthy, happy life.  How would you rate your skill?  Do you think it’s your “supervisor’s” job to make you happy?

Mind you, I’m not a happiness guru.  In fact, happiness has been an illusive, lifelong pursuit of mine.  For many years I wasn’t happy but I wanted to be, so I pursued happiness.  It wasn’t handed to me.  I put myself on a performance improvement plan.  As I look back, I’d give myself high marks for determination.

Yes, I went down many rabbit holes, made progress, and then backslid.  And sometimes I’d get in a positive groove and be high on life thinking this feeling would last forever.  Often, though, I’d slip again into a pitty party wailing “Why is this so HARD?”  Waaaaaaaahhhhh.  But I stuck with it because…I’m like that.  Once I decide that something is important to me, I get on the trail and track it down like a dog!

I still work at happiness.  But at least now I know that my success is up to me so there’s less suffering about it.   And I have a Positive Life tool kit.  Want some of these tools?

Positive Life Tools

Get out a piece of paper and ponder the topic of positive living for a minute or two if it speaks to you.  I’ll start the energy moving by listing several things that might help you stay on the positive side of life:

  • hang around with positive people

  • resist saying negative things

  • post inspiring quotes around your house

  • read something inspirational every day - even if just a few pages

  • meditate, pray, and commune with nature every day

  • pause to say what you’re grateful for regularly

  • say nice things to yourself about yourself

  • say nice things to other people

  • write a description of your ideal life (using the positive, present tense)

  • read your ideal life description every day

  • what can you add to this list?

Make up a list like this, give it a title, and post it on your refrigerator like a positive living menu to choose from when you feel sorry for yourself, a little down, or when you feel that life just isn’t what you hoped it would be.

Take up the reigns of your life and make it what you want it to be.  The first step is to decide that it’s up to you….and that you want it!

Your Turn

At the very very bottom of this page, there’s a place to leave your comments.  Do you have a positive living tip to share?  Are you a positive person?  Do you want to be?  What are the challenges?

To your healthy, happy life!

When feeling a little down, I always think of those who have it harder than me: less income or no income, illness, abusive relationship, etc.
That helps me appreciate what I have and cheers me up.

    Thankyou .

I’m celebrating 3 yrs in remission from Lupus. I made a lot of changes in my life in order to get it back. Nutrition and Glyconutrition played a big part and also a positive mindset played a big part in my gaining remission. Everything on your list was/is on mine. I also keep in contact with my “kid-self” and write in “me” time into my weekly schedule. On the face of it it appears selfish…but “me” time makes me a healthier me for everyone. Positive living encompasses every facet of your life and especially your thoughts. You will have what you tell yourself. I also make it a regular practice to have a bouquet of flowers in my living/working space. The beauty of nature is highly positive.
