Q. Dear Cheryl,
I’ve been working late hours recently because I’m working to pay down my debt. I’ve been hearing a lot about a “fourth meal.” I know people mostly have 3 meals a day, but I’m thinking if I work extra hours does my body need a fourth meal to keep me going?
A. This is a great question! Good for you for recognizing that a true wellness lifestyle includes being financially “well.”
My short answer is: heck NO! The only people who need a fourth meal are the shareholders of Taco Bell. But, seriously, you don’t need a fourth meal - no one does.
However, you are right to be concerned about getting quality, healthy fuel to help you get through those extra hours. My wellness recommendation would be to have a small snack of no more than 200 calories that includes protein. Some examples are:
- half of a peanut butter and fruit spread sandwich
- half of a turkey sandwich with mustard, spinach leaves and tomato
- 8 almonds and a piece of fruit
- a medium banana and a yogurt
- a cup of soup

During the course of the day, be sure to eat loads of vegetables and the fruits your body craves in order to boost your intake of Vitamin C, micro nutrients, and fiber. When you have snacks during the day, try to snack on fruits and veggies that are high in vitamin C. That will help keep your immune system functioning at optimal levels.
And don’t underestimate the power of water to give you energy. Most of us are running at least a quart low. Dehydration zaps energy - big time. One of the biggest challenges my clients have is remembering to drink more water. I show them how to set up a watering system and pair drinking water with their other daily activities like brushing their teeth. Having a system helps!
Also, when we work a lot, our stress levels tend to hit the roof. If you can’t get extra B vitamins in your diet through whole grains, take a B-complex supplement once a day. Also, take short a 10-minute walk or have a meditation session during the day. The “high” that you get from these activities will help you “reboot” to go the distance.
When you do get a chance to rest, try to get at least 7 hours and make sure your room is pitch black (no TV!) and that you’re not too hot or too cold.
Back to work!

P.S. Feel free to submit your wellness question. Send it to me here.
P.P. S. Do you have a comment about the question or my answer? Please share it in the comment box at the very, very bottom. Thanks!
